Recently, Monica Eliot, Director-General of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), was interviewed by this reporter on issues related to the prevention and control of African swine fever. She said that since the outbreak of African swine fever in China in August last year, China has made great efforts in the prevention and control of the epidemic. OIE is very much aware of China's work on African swine fever information reporting and epidemic management. At present, the epidemic situation of African swine fever in China has shown a downward trend. We are very confident that China can control the epidemic. But we must also see that African swine fever is a more difficult disease to control, and it must be patient and ready for long-term control.

Reporter: Hello! What are the characteristics of the occurrence and development of the global African swine fever epidemic since 2018?

Eliot: Since 2018, the global porcine plague situation in Africa has been relatively severe. The epidemic situation in many regions is still spreading. At present, the African swine fever epidemic has been introduced to China, Mongolia and other countries. Therefore, the current global situation we need to deal with will be more complicated than before.

Reporter: Comparing the development of African swine fever in other countries, combined with China's aquaculture and stocking density, how do you evaluate China's work and role in preventing and controlling African swine fever?

Eliot: China is the world's largest producer of pig farming and pork. The epidemic affects not only the hog industry but also related international trade. I want to say that after the outbreak, the Chinese government attaches great importance to it. From the central government to the local government, the governments at all levels have taken strong preventive and control measures from the top to the bottom. I highly recognize the prevention and control measures taken by China. We can see that over time, many major measures to control the epidemic have been adopted, including restricting the transportation of live pigs and prohibiting the feeding of kitchen wastes. The quality of prevention and control is constantly improving. I am very confident that China can better control the epidemic.

Reporter: What difficulties does the world face in preventing and controlling African swine fever? What kind of work does it take for countries to work together?

Eliot: The biggest difficulty in the prevention and control of swine fever in the world is that there is no effective vaccine in the world. Therefore, very strict bio-security measures must be implemented to solve problems such as illegal smuggling and passengers. African swine fever is not only a problem for pig farmers, but also for everyone, including tourists and visiting relatives. Therefore, I appeal to everyone to pay attention to this issue.

Reporter: How do you view the first epidemic in China?

Eliot: For me, this is bad news. China is a big pig producing country and a big pork producer. Before China, there was no African swine fever. Although we believe that China has the ability and the government attaches great importance to it, we are worried about the pressure on neighboring countries and the inability of neighboring countries to cope. Therefore, China must not only prevent and control the domestic epidemic, but also bear huge responsibilities. At present, China has close trade with most countries in the world, and these trading partners also expressed concern. I am confident and believe that the Chinese government and all Chinese people have the confidence to take responsibility and strengthen cooperation to ensure their economic and social development and the development of other partner countries.

Reporter: How do you evaluate China's African piglet prevention and control policy?

Eliot: From the current point of view, China's policies are all correct. From November 2018, we have seen that the epidemic in China has shown a downward trend, and the assessment is more optimistic, but in the long run, there are still uncertainties. I would like to point out that exchanges and contacts between countries are very important. The situation varies from country to country and the system is different. However, strengthening technical exchanges and public knowledge publicity will greatly benefit the prevention and control of African piglets.

Reporter: How do you evaluate the impact of the epidemic on the hog industry and the market?

Eliot: At present, African swine fever is the most important animal disease to the hog industry. Therefore, the African swine fever epidemic will definitely affect the production and market prices of pigs, which will cause production losses. However, I believe that China has taken effective measures. If it continues to effectively control the epidemic, it will not have a great impact on the Chinese market.
